Vaikom Management Association Musing Series: Session on Energy Crisis in Kerala

Wednesday Musings - Celebrating May Day
Vaikom Management Association Musing Series: Session on Energy Crisis in Kerala
The Vaikom Management Association is pleased to continue its Musing series, addressing timely and relevant topics. Following our initial discussion on the national energy scenario, our second session focused on the energy landscape of Kerala.
On May 1, 2024, we had the privilege of hosting Sri A. Saifuddin, former Principal of the Power Engineers Training & Research Centre at KSEBL, who delivered an insightful session titled “Energy Crisis in Kerala.” Drawing from his extensive experience in the sector, Sri Saifuddin provided a comprehensive overview of the history of hydel projects in Kerala.
Kerala, once a state abundant in hydel power generation, initially attracted industries for energy consumption. However, the current scenario reveals a concerning shift, as the state now relies heavily on power imports from the national grid. Sri Saifuddin's captivating insights into the operations of hydel generating stations highlighted the challenges faced in power management, particularly in light of the widening gap between electricity demand and the impacts of climate change.
During his presentation, he emphasized the urgent need for exploring viable hydel projects and advocated for increased budget allocations to the board to effectively meet its projects and targets.
The session was well-attended, with 42 participants, including our members and students from the Sustainable Development Club at St. Xavier’s College, Vaikom. The engagement and discussions that followed underscored the importance of addressing the energy crisis in Kerala and exploring sustainable solutions for the future.
We look forward to continuing this important dialogue in our upcoming sessions.

This program was part of the “Monday Musings” series, an initiative by VMA aimed at leveraging the expertise of in-house specialists and fostering a community interested in online learning. The event was formally inaugurated by Sri. P. Rajendra Prasad, the founder President of VMA, who expressed his best wishes for the success of the team’s innovative efforts to convey important messages regarding energy and sustainability.
Sri. M. Raju, Secretary General of VMA, provided an overview of the event's scope and emphasized the significance of the topic in relation to World Earth Day. The session attracted approximately 41 participants, including VMA members, students from St. Xavier's College in Kothavara, Vaikom, and other interested individuals.

The session was well-attended, with 42 participants, including our members and students from the Sustainable Development Club at St. Xavier’s College, Vaikom. The engagement and discussions that followed underscored the importance of addressing the energy crisis in Kerala and exploring sustainable solutions for the future.
